Vitamin B12 may hold a vital key in decreasing the risk of both autism and schizophrenia. In this study, "Brain levels of vitamin B12 decrease with age and are prematurely low in people with autism and schizophrenia" found levels of vitamin B12 in the brain were significantly decreased in older people and in individuals with autism or schizophrenia.
When looking at levels of various types of B12 in the brains across age ranges, the study found total vitamin B12 was found to be significantly lower in older subjects (>60 years of age) reflecting a 10-fold decline in Methyl-B12 (methylcobalamin [MeCbl]) levels from younger subjects. Additionally, a greater than 3-fold decrease in MeCbl and adenosylcobalamin (AdoCbl) levels were found in both autistic and schizophrenic subjects compared to their age-matched controls.
Methyl-B12 is vital for the folate-dependent enzyme methionine synthase (MS) in brain development and function. At least 40 percent of the population has a genetic SNP (Single Nuceotide Polymorphism) – call it a genetic glitch – that makes it difficult to convert the regular B-vitamin folate to methyl-folate. The combined need for both methyl-B12 and methyl-folate, in conjunction with the findings of this study, may suggest that supplementation with both, before pregnancy and perhaps throughout life – given the natural deterioration of our brain levels of these key nutrients – is worth considering.
